It Keeps Getting Better

I have never been one that tithes much. I suppose it was a lack of faith. Last week, Annette and I discussed it and decided that we needed to start. Sunday morning, we basically had gas money to get to church. As we got dressed, Annette found money in her pocket that we had forgot about. We took a leap of faith and gave it to the church.

Monday morning came, she was expecting a check that would carry us through the week. I checked the mail looking for it. It wasn't there! But wait, what is this other letter addressed to me? It was from a former employer. It seems that they had mis-figured a paycheck and had sent a check for the difference. Amazingly, it was for almost the same amount as the other one we were expecting.

Wait, save your praise for a minute, I'm not done yet. While in shock, the phone rings. My new employer wanted to know if I could go ahead and start work in two hours. All they wanted was for me to go through orientation and do some paper work.

When I arrived, I asked for the Human Resources person. They led me to her and she said, "The manager needs to speak with you for a moment."

The manager informed me that they need a manager for the overnight shift. I don't like this shift but, she said that it would only be for a month or so. If I would take this position, she would pay me more money and give me a shift differential. All told, with the raises, I will make per hour almost the same amount that we put in the offering Sunday. An amount that I had not dreamed about.

Jeff Lee,

God is USING you to get at me. I am so serious. Your past two blogs have been so on point for me. I am SOOOO happy for you and your wife. That is so awesome. God is so faithful isn't He?

OMG! So, the message on Sunday was called "Are you listening?" My pastor was talking about how God is silent with us when we pray to him a lot of times. He is silent either because we have unconfessed sin in our lives, or because He wants us to trust Him more. He said that we have to learn to TRUST God in His silence. WOW! He said sometimes when we pray we just have to go to God in total silence and say, "God I don't have anything to say and just sit and listen." He said a lot of times when God is silent we automatically go on a guilt trip and think what did I do to make God do this. When, in essence we didn't do anything. He just wants us to sit back and relax and be silent while He take care of whatever it is He wants us to take care of.

I loved your blog. Today I was discouraged because I so need a job. I told God, "okay, you know it is getting tighter and you know what we need. I was getting a little discouraged." Your blog has brought me to tears and on my knees.

Thank you so much for being vulnerable and sharing because I needed it today.

Jeff,
It seems you have come to the conclusion that the blessings you mentioned all came because of the money you gave that morning in church. To me the bigger issue is that you may believe that God requires a "tithe" from believers. He does not. Any blessings we receive from God are the result of either his grace or our faith in his provision for us but certainly not because we "earned" his blessings by tithing.

There are 20 frequently asked questions about tithing at www.nomoretithing.org that might be interesting to you. On the LINKS page you will find over 2 dozen books and 3 dozen web sites that all teach that Christians are free from the Law that the Jews were required to keep which includes the requirement to tithe.

In one way, George is right- God didn't bless you because of the money you gave- He blessed you because of the trust you gave Him. As to being set free from tithing- I don't believe that. I used to, but not anymore. Tithing is a good way to show trust in God. Withholding your tithe says you don't trust Him to take care of you financially and that you can do it better than He can. You can count on bounced checks, late checks, unexpected expenses, etc...if you go the no tithing route. And not because God needs your money because He surely doesn't, but because He wants your total trust put in Him alone.
